EBook readers like the Apple iPad and Amazon Kindle are changing the way books are published and moving the model from a traditional one to something more attainable and maintainable for new and established authors. By giving the control back to the authors, instead of having to pass through the barrage of agents, publishers and editors, authors can create just what they envisioned for the reader.
To publish your work in the ipad, all that’s needed is a Mac and a word processor—with a little patience, you can convert any file into the .epub format and upload it for sale and reading—directly onto the Apple iBookstore.
The steps below show you just how simple it is and can be for you. But remember: the downloadable books will only be available to users who already own an iPhone or iPad. You will also need an Intel Mac running OS X 10.5 or a later version, enough hard disk space and a high speed internet connection.
- Before beginning, you will need to convert your existing (and completed) manuscript into the .epub format which you can do so following the steps mentioned in this link: http://www.lexcycle.com/faq/how_to_create_epub
- The next step is buying an ISBN number which you can from Bowker for $125. Please note, if you search around, you can find other sites that will sell you an ISBN for as low $25.
- You will need to have your US Tax ID (Social Security Number or EIN) and a valid iTunes account with a valid credit card attached to the account, at hand.
- You are now ready to apply for participation in the iBookstore distribution network via Apple.com.
What about when it comes to selling your book? Is there anyone out there who can help you or expedite the process for you? Fortunately, there are—many will take the selling exercise right off your hands—for a fee, of course. But before handing over your book, you will still need to convert it into the .epub standard format. The best way in finding accurate and reputable companies is by going through Apple’s compiled list of approved aggregators, who will charge you an upfront fee but handle all distribution services. In most cases, you will get full profits from your book sales, after Apple takes their cut of course.
Since prices and packages can vary from one aggregator to the next, be advised that you might need to get a number of quotes before settling on your preferred choice.
Well what are you waiting for? Get out there!
